Cityspire, 150 West 56 Street - Midtown, New York

One of the city's most controversial buildings, CitySpire became its tallest mixed-use building when it opened in 1988. It was designed by Helmut Jahn of Murphy/Jahn, the Chicago-based architect. Jahn, a master architect who invariably experiments with building elements and colors, has here mixed angles with purple facade elements in a dizzyingly thin slab tower. Its real strength is the lobby, an extremely elegant, warm, richly wooded, domed space with a glass entrance marquee. The lower 24 floors of the tower are commercial space. Both sections offer a high degree of service: Amenities at the condominium residence include a full-time doorman, full-service garage, fitness center, laundry facilities, pool, conference room and a children's playroom. This ideal Midtown location is just minutes from Central Park, Columbus Circle, Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, as well as convenient to all forms of public transportation.
